The Pirate Party in Manchester. Looking forward to the Ancoats and Clayton By-election, December 2013

Manchester MPs Back Mass Surveillance

In a stitch up between the 3 big parties Manchester MPs opted to back rushing through “emergency” mass surveillance laws. Back in April the EU and its member countries were told to think again about mass surveillance by the European Court of Justice who found that blanket data collection violated the right to a private life. In other words, keeping a record of your text home asking whether you need to buy milk is not necessary for fighting the bad guys. However, the government along with t...

Changes to Voter registration

The way we register to vote is changing from July 2014. The government is describing it as the “biggest change in a generation”. The main difference is that we will all be individually responsible for registering to vote rather than the “head of the household” putting everyone at an address on the same form. Let's face it “head of the household” is a bit outdated in the 21st century, and hopefully the government is right when they say it should make the electoral register more accurate and acco...

Time for Manchester to Stand up on Surveillance

We hear all the time that the British public don't care about mass surveillance, privacy and Edward Snowden, but we know that's not true. It may be that those inside the Westminster bubble have been able to hide from how people really feel up to now, but it's time to change that. It's time for members of Parliament to stand up, be counted, and support our freedoms. We are asking you to contact your Manchester  Member of Parliament to ask them to support Early Day Motion 147. It need not ta...

The Day We Fight Back

For months now Snowden's revelations have shown the true shocking extent of massive state surveillance. Much of the anger has rightly focused on the United States and the NSA. But as Edward Snowden put it, the UK and GCHQ "has a big dog in this fight" too. Amongst what we've found out is the mass and indiscriminate collection of email, phone calls, website visits, facebook posts and tweets. The breaking into, tapping of and collaboration with large corporations such as Yahoo, Google, Microso...

Don’t Lose Your Voice! #NVRD

Make sure you don't lose your voice - your vote is your chance to have your say. Electoral Registration is separate from other parts of administration. Just because you pay tax or have a library card you are not automatically registered to vote. Also if you have moved recently, make sure Electoral Services are aware of your new address. Remember if you are an EU citizen you can vote in the up coming local and EU elections. And frankly with parties like UKIP standing you should really get ...

Beat The Snoopers: Manchester Cryptoparty

Government mass surveillance is big news again, with Obama admitting maybe things have got a bit out of hand. But as ever, there is no guarantee of protection from the NSA for foreigners. We're figuring that Mancunians count as foreigners in POTUS's book. So you can learn more about how to protect your privacy and look after your data right here thanks to the folks at Cryptoparty Manchester. They have announced the city's first Free Software festival for February, opening at MadLab on Mond...

Cannabis Cafe Debate

Reports by the Manchester Evening News that campaigner Colin Davies is to open a “cannabis cafe” in the Northern Quarter has certainly kicked off a debate in the city. It has always been the Pirate Party's point of view that policy on drugs needs to be driven by evidence, and not hysteria. It's vital that it becomes an issue of health policy, not policing. Loz Kaye debated the case with a city centre councillor in the Manchester Evening News – link here.

Talk: Snowden and the Snooping State

Talk by Loz Kaye on mass surveillance at the Friends Meeting House 7pm August 7th. followed by discussion. There has been a fierce debate sparked by the revelations of state snooping by Edward Snowden. The government proposed legislation to know who we are emailing, texting and sharing social media with, and both Tories and Labour still support this. Security cameras are pointed at from all angles here in Manchester. How far should the state go in the name of keeping us safe? What is the balance...
